Mode Of Action

Tropicamide is a tertiary amine antimuscarinic which causes relaxation of the sphincter muscle of the iris resulting in pupillary dilatation. It also causes paralysis of the ciliary muscle leading to loss of accommodation.

Indication

• Uveitis
• Production of mydriasis

Precaution

Elderly, children, pregnancy. Hypertension, hyperthyroidism, DM, cardiac disorders. To reduce systemic absorption, press on the lacrimal sac for 1-2 minutes following instillation. Do not drive or engage in hazardous activities and protect eyes from bright illumination when pupils are dilated. May fail to produce adequate cycloplegia in children.

Side Effects

• Transient stinging
• blurred vision
• photophobia and superficial punctate keratitis have been reported with the use of tropicamide. Increased intraocular pressure has been reported following the use of mydriatics. Dryness of the mouth
• tachycardia
• headache
• allergic reactions
• nausea
• vomiting
• pallor
• central nervous system disturbances and muscle rigidity have been reported with the use of tropicamide.

Contra indication

Contraindicated in persons showing hypersensitivity to any component of this preparation.

Pregnancy category: C

Animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks
