What is LIDAPRIM (Children)

LIDAPRIM (Children) is an oral suspension containing a combination of two antibiotics: Sulphamethoxazole and Trimethoprim, commonly known together as Co-trimoxazole. This formulation is specially designed for pediatric use, offering a palatable liquid format that makes it easier for children to take.

The medicine works by blocking the production of folic acid in bacteria, an essential nutrient for their survival and multiplication. It is effective against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.

How to use LIDAPRIM (Children)

Always use LIDAPRIM for children exactly as prescribed by the doctor. The dosage is based on the child’s body weight and the type of infection being treated.

• Shake well: Always shake the bottle well before each use to ensure uniform distribution of the medicine.
• Measurement: Use a proper dosing syringe or spoon to measure the exact dose — never use a household spoon.
• With or without food: It can be taken with or without meals, though giving it with food can help minimize stomach upset.
• Hydration: Ensure the child stays well hydrated during the course of treatment.
• Duration: Complete the entire prescribed course, even if symptoms improve earlier, to prevent resistance and recurrence.

Missed a dose? Administer it as soon as you remember, unless it's almost time for the next dose. Do not double the dose.

LIDAPRIM combines two active antibacterial agents that inhibit sequential steps in the bacterial folic acid synthesis pathway:

• Sulphamethoxazole: Blocks dihydropteroate synthase, an enzyme essential for folic acid synthesis.
• Trimethoprim: Inhibits dihydrofolate reductase, another critical enzyme in the same pathway.
• Combined Effect: This sequential blockage results in enhanced antibacterial activity and reduces the risk of bacterial resistance.

This synergistic action makes LIDAPRIM highly effective for treating susceptible infections in pediatric patients.

LIDAPRIM suspension may interact with other medications your child is taking. Always inform your doctor of all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal products being used.

• Diuretics: Increases risk of electrolyte disturbances like hypokalemia.
• Anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin): May enhance the blood-thinning effect; careful monitoring of INR is required.
• Phenytoin: May increase levels of this antiepileptic, raising the risk of side effects.
• Methotrexate: Can increase risk of bone marrow suppression.

Close monitoring or dose adjustment may be necessary when LIDAPRIM is used with these medications.

Dosage of LIDAPRIM (Children)

The dosage depends on the child’s body weight, age, and the severity of the infection. Your pediatrician will determine the appropriate dose.

• Typical Dose: Often given twice daily (every 12 hours).
• Dosage Guide:
  • For mild to moderate infections: 40 mg/kg/day (Sulfamethoxazole component), divided into two doses
  • For severe infections: Your doctor may adjust the dose accordingly
• Duration: 5 to 14 days, depending on the infection being treated.

Do not stop treatment early even if the child feels better, unless advised by the doctor.

• Keep out of reach of children.

Do not use the medication beyond its expiry date. Shake the bottle before every use to maintain proper consistency.
