What is OTOSEPTIL

OTOSEPTIL is a topical ear drop formulation containing three active components: Tyrothricin, Neomycin, and Macrogol. This combination provides a powerful triple-action approach to treat external ear infections, particularly otitis externa and other localized ear inflammations caused by bacterial pathogens.

• Tyrothricin: A polypeptide antibiotic that disrupts bacterial cell membranes, mainly targeting Gram-positive bacteria.
• Neomycin: An aminoglycoside antibiotic effective against a broad spectrum of Gram-negative and some Gram-positive organisms.
• Macrogol: Also known as polyethylene glycol, which acts as a solvent and emulsifier, improving the delivery and retention of the active ingredients in the ear canal.

OTOSEPTIL is primarily indicated for the treatment of ear infections such as:

• Acute or chronic otitis externa
• Secondary infections of eczematous ear conditions
• Post-surgical infections (under supervision)

How to use OTOSEPTIL

Proper use of OTOSEPTIL ensures effective treatment and reduces the risk of resistance or complications.

• Wash your hands thoroughly before and after applying the drops.
• Shake the bottle gently.
• Warm the bottle in your hands for a minute to avoid dizziness due to cold liquid.
• Lie on your side or tilt your head to ensure the affected ear is facing upward.
• Instill the prescribed number of drops into the ear canal (usually 3-5 drops).
• Keep your head tilted for 3-5 minutes to allow the medication to penetrate.
• Repeat in the other ear if required.

Important: Do not insert any objects into the ear canal. Complete the full course as prescribed, even if symptoms improve early.

The effectiveness of OTOSEPTIL is based on the synergistic action of its three ingredients:

• Tyrothricin: Acts by disrupting bacterial cell membrane integrity, causing cell lysis and death. Its effect is primarily bactericidal and especially potent against Gram-positive organisms.
• Neomycin: Binds to bacterial ribosomal RNA, inhibiting protein synthesis and leading to bacterial cell death. It is effective against a broad range of pathogens, especially Gram-negative species.
• Macrogol: Functions as a carrier, ensuring uniform distribution of the antibiotics and maintaining moisture for optimal drug absorption and comfort.

Together, this combination ensures rapid relief from pain, inflammation, and infection within the ear canal.

OTOSEPTIL Interactions OTOSEPTIL

Although OTOSEPTIL is a topical medication, systemic absorption may still occur, especially with prolonged use or broken skin. Interactions are rare but possible.

• Ototoxic drugs: Concurrent use with other ototoxic agents (like loop diuretics or systemic aminoglycosides) can increase the risk of hearing damage, especially in cases of tympanic membrane perforation.
• Systemic antibiotics: Care should be taken to avoid duplication or cumulative toxicity with other aminoglycosides.
• Corticosteroids: If used concurrently, these can mask infection symptoms, complicating clinical assessment.

Always inform your healthcare provider about all medications you are currently taking.

Dosage of OTOSEPTIL

The dosage of OTOSEPTIL may vary depending on the severity of the infection and the patient’s age and condition.

• Adults: Instill 3-5 drops into the affected ear 2–3 times daily.
• Children: Usually 2–3 drops, but always follow pediatrician recommendations.
• Duration: Typically used for 5–7 days. Prolonged use should be avoided due to potential ototoxicity or resistance.

Note: Always complete the course even if symptoms improve. Do not exceed the recommended dosage.

Possible side effects of OTOSEPTIL

Like all medications, OTOSEPTIL can cause side effects, though not everyone experiences them. Most are mild and self-limiting.

• Local irritation: Burning or stinging sensation in the ear canal shortly after application.
• Allergic reactions: Rash, itching, swelling, especially if allergic to neomycin or other aminoglycosides.
• Ototoxicity: Rare but serious, especially if the eardrum is perforated.
• Secondary fungal infections: May occur with prolonged use due to disruption of normal flora.

If any signs of severe reaction or worsening symptoms occur, discontinue use and consult a physician immediately.

OTOSEPTIL Contraindications OTOSEPTIL

Use of OTOSEPTIL is contraindicated in certain situations due to the potential for harm or reduced efficacy.

• Perforated eardrum: Use is not recommended due to risk of inner ear toxicity.
• Known allergy: Hypersensitivity to neomycin, tyrothricin, or any component of the formulation.
• Severe ear infections involving middle or inner ear: Topical therapy may not be sufficient.

Storage of OTOSEPTIL

• Light & moisture: Protect from direct sunlight and moisture.

• Expiry: Do not use after the expiry date printed on the label. Discard opened bottles after 4 weeks.
