What is LIFULAX

LIFULAX is a therapeutic oral solution that contains Lactulose, a synthetic disaccharide used primarily for managing constipation and hepatic encephalopathy (HE). As a type of osmotic laxative and colonic acidifier, LIFULAX works by softening the stool and lowering ammonia levels in patients with liver dysfunction. It is especially useful in patients with chronic liver disease to prevent or manage mental confusion, drowsiness, or coma caused by excess ammonia in the blood.

This 300 ml HDPE bottle is designed for longer-term therapy or for use in households with ongoing treatment needs. The solution typically contains 667 mg of Lactulose per 1 ml. Its sweet taste and syrup-like consistency make it easier to administer, even for those who have difficulty swallowing tablets.

How to use LIFULAX

LIFULAX should be used exactly as prescribed by your physician. It is an oral solution intended for use with or without food, and the dosage depends on the condition being treated.

• For Constipation: Often taken once daily
• For Hepatic Encephalopathy: Taken multiple times a day to maintain 2–3 soft stools daily
• Measurement: Use a measuring spoon or dosing cup for accurate dosing
• Mixing: May be taken as is or diluted with water, juice, or milk
• Hydration: Maintain good fluid intake during treatment

Do not stop or change your dosage without medical advice. Effects on bowel movement typically begin within 24 to 48 hours of use.

Mode of Action LIFULAX

Lactulose is not digested in the upper gastrointestinal tract. Once it reaches the colon, it is broken down by bacteria into short-chain fatty acids such as lactic acid and acetic acid. These exert multiple therapeutic effects:

• Osmotic Action: Increases water retention in the colon to soften stool and promote bowel movements
• pH Reduction: Lowers the pH of the colon, converting toxic ammonia (NH₃) into ammonium (NH₄⁺), which is less absorbable
• Prebiotic Effect: Encourages the growth of beneficial gut bacteria

This combination makes LIFULAX effective in both relieving constipation and lowering blood ammonia in patients with liver disease.

LIFULAX Interactions LIFULAX

LIFULAX may have interactions with other medications or substances:

• Antibiotics: May reduce the effect of lactulose by suppressing necessary gut bacteria
• Antacids: May affect colonic pH and reduce the effectiveness of the drug in treating hepatic encephalopathy
• Diuretics: Concurrent use may increase the risk of dehydration and electrolyte imbalances
• Other Laxatives: Should be used cautiously or avoided unless directed by a physician

Dosage of LIFULAX

Possible side effects of LIFULAX

Most side effects are mild and manageable, especially with dose adjustments:

• Very Common: Gas, bloating, mild abdominal cramps
• Common: Diarrhea (especially if dosage is too high), nausea
• Rare but Serious: Electrolyte imbalance, dehydration, or allergic reaction (rash, swelling, itching)

Contact your healthcare provider if you experience persistent diarrhea, confusion, muscle cramps, or swelling.

Storage of LIFULAX
