What is LIFULAX

LIFULAX is a therapeutic oral solution containing Lactulose, a synthetic disaccharide widely used for two key medical purposes: the treatment of constipation and the management of hepatic encephalopathy, a liver-related condition caused by high ammonia levels in the blood. As a non-absorbable sugar, lactulose is metabolized by colonic bacteria into organic acids that draw water into the colon, soften stools, and reduce the absorption of ammonia in patients with liver dysfunction.

This formulation is presented in a 200 ml HDPE bottle, suitable for outpatient and home settings where longer-term management is necessary. The solution is viscous and sweet-tasting, with each milliliter typically containing 667 mg of lactulose.

How to use LIFULAX

LIFULAX should be taken exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. The dosage and frequency vary depending on the condition being treated.

• Route: Oral administration only
• Measuring: Always use a calibrated measuring spoon or cup
• Timing: Once or multiple times per day as directed
• With or Without Food: Can be taken either way
• Hydration: Drink plenty of water to support bowel movement

Mode of Action LIFULAX

Lactulose functions through a dual mechanism depending on its indication:

• Osmotic Effect: Once in the colon, it is broken down by bacterial flora into low-molecular-weight organic acids (lactic, acetic, formic acids), which increase osmotic pressure and water retention in the bowel—leading to easier stool passage.
• Reduction of Ammonia: These acids also acidify the colon’s contents, converting freely absorbable ammonia (NH₃) into the non-absorbable ammonium ion (NH₄⁺), thereby reducing systemic ammonia levels in hepatic encephalopathy.

These mechanisms help alleviate both constipation and cognitive disturbances associated with liver disease.

LIFULAX Interactions LIFULAX

While generally well-tolerated, LIFULAX may interact with other substances and medications:

• Antibiotics: May alter intestinal flora, reducing the conversion of lactulose and thus its effectiveness
• Antacids: Can alter pH and interfere with the colonic acidification process
• Diuretics: Can increase the risk of dehydration and electrolyte imbalance, especially with prolonged use
• Other Laxatives: Should be avoided unless specifically advised by your doctor

Always inform your physician of any other medications or supplements you are using.

Dosage of LIFULAX

The dosage is individualized based on the medical condition:

• For Constipation in Adults: 15–30 ml per day; may be adjusted based on response

Possible side effects of LIFULAX

Most side effects are mild and related to the gastrointestinal tract. Common and uncommon effects include:

• Rare: Electrolyte imbalance (hypokalemia, hypernatremia), allergic reactions like rash or facial swelling

LIFULAX Contraindications LIFULAX

LIFULAX is contraindicated in the following conditions:

• Known allergy or hypersensitivity to lactulose or excipients

• Suspected intestinal obstruction or perforation
• Unexplained abdominal pain

Use cautiously in diabetic patients due to the sugar content in the formulation.
