What is LIFULAX

LIFULAX is an oral liquid medication that contains the active ingredient Lactulose, a synthetic sugar used to treat constipation and manage hepatic encephalopathy—a condition associated with liver dysfunction. As an osmotic laxative and colonic acidifier, LIFULAX promotes regular bowel movements and helps reduce elevated levels of ammonia in the blood, a critical concern in patients with chronic liver disease.

The solution is mildly sweet, viscous, and typically contains 667 mg of lactulose per 1 ml. It is available in a 120 ml high-density polyethylene (HDPE) bottle, making it suitable for short to intermediate therapeutic courses. This formulation is especially helpful for patients who have difficulty swallowing pills or require dosage flexibility.

How to use LIFULAX

LIFULAX should be taken exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. The dosage and frequency depend on your condition, age, and clinical response.

• Acidification of Colon Contents: Reduces pH, which converts toxic ammonia (NH₃) to ammonium (NH₄⁺), a less absorbable form excreted in stool

These combined effects help manage both constipation and neurotoxic symptoms related to elevated ammonia levels in the blood.

LIFULAX Interactions LIFULAX

LIFULAX has a low potential for systemic drug interactions due to its local action in the gut, but certain medications and conditions can impact its effectiveness.

• Antibiotics: May reduce gut flora necessary for lactulose metabolism, reducing its effect (especially in hepatic encephalopathy)
• Antacids: May alter the pH of the colon, reducing efficacy
• Other Laxatives: Should be avoided unless advised by a doctor
• Diuretics: May increase risk of dehydration or electrolyte imbalance

Dosage of LIFULAX

Possible side effects of LIFULAX

LIFULAX is generally safe when used as directed, though some side effects may occur.

• Common: Flatulence, abdominal bloating, mild cramps, nausea
• Less Common: Diarrhea (especially with higher doses), dehydration, electrolyte imbalance (e.g., low potassium)
• Rare: Allergic reactions such as rash, swelling, or difficulty breathing

LIFULAX Contraindications LIFULAX
