What is LIFULAX

LIFULAX is an oral solution containing Lactulose, a synthetic disaccharide used primarily as a laxative and ammonia-reducing agent. It is widely prescribed for the treatment of constipation and for managing hepatic encephalopathy, a serious complication of liver disease caused by high blood ammonia levels. LIFULAX works by drawing water into the colon and promoting healthy bowel movements, and in cases of liver disease, it helps convert ammonia into a non-toxic form that is excreted in the stool.

How to use LIFULAX

LIFULAX should be taken exactly as directed by a healthcare professional. The dose may vary depending on the condition being treated (e.g., constipation vs hepatic encephalopathy) and the patient's age and response.

• Administration Route: Oral
• Dosage Form: Liquid – can be taken directly or diluted in water or juice
• With Food: May be taken with or without food
• Hydration: Adequate fluid intake is recommended during treatment
• Measuring: Use a proper measuring spoon or cup to ensure accurate dosing

Do not exceed the recommended dose. Effects typically begin within 24–48 hours of use.

Mode of Action LIFULAX

Lactulose acts as an osmotic laxative and a colonic acidifier.

• In the colon, it is broken down by bacteria into low-molecular-weight acids (lactic acid, acetic acid, etc.)
• These acids increase the osmotic pressure in the colon, drawing water into the bowel
• This softens the stool and stimulates peristalsis, facilitating bowel movement
• In hepatic encephalopathy, the acidic environment converts ammonia (NH₃) to ammonium (NH₄⁺), which is less absorbable and is excreted in feces

This dual mechanism makes LIFULAX effective for both constipation and reducing systemic ammonia levels.

LIFULAX Interactions LIFULAX

While LIFULAX is generally well tolerated, it may interact with certain medications or affect how they work.

• Antacids: May reduce the acidification effect in the colon and reduce efficacy
• Other laxatives: Should not be used concurrently unless prescribed
• Oral antibiotics: May reduce the colonic bacteria that metabolize lactulose, decreasing its effectiveness (especially for hepatic encephalopathy)
• Diuretics: Risk of electrolyte imbalance if used together

Always inform your doctor about any medications or supplements you are taking before starting LIFULAX.

Dosage of LIFULAX

Dosage should be individualized based on indication and patient response. Typical adult dosages are:

• For Constipation: 15–30 ml daily; may be adjusted up to 60 ml/day
• For Hepatic Encephalopathy: Initial dose of 30–45 ml 3–4 times daily until 2–3 soft stools per day are produced
• Children: Dose depends on age and weight; a pediatrician should prescribe it

It may take 24–48 hours to see an effect, particularly when used for constipation.

Possible side effects of LIFULAX

LIFULAX is usually well tolerated, especially at lower doses. However, higher doses or prolonged use can result in side effects.

• Common: Flatulence, bloating, cramping, nausea
• Less Common: Diarrhea, increased thirst, electrolyte imbalances (especially with prolonged use)
• Rare: Allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling)

Inform your doctor if you experience persistent abdominal discomfort or signs of dehydration or confusion.

LIFULAX Contraindications LIFULAX

LIFULAX should not be used in the following conditions unless specifically advised by a physician:

• Galactosemia (contains small amounts of galactose)
• Bowel obstruction
• Patients requiring a low-galactose or low-lactose diet
• Hypersensitivity to lactulose or any of its components

Use with caution in patients with diabetes due to potential sugar content.

Storage of LIFULAX

• Store at room temperature (15–25°C)
• Do not freeze
• Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use
• Keep out of reach of children

Do not use LIFULAX after the expiry date mentioned on the packaging. Shake well before each use.
