ACTIFED Syrup

What is ACTIFED

ACTIFED Syrup is a combination medication used for the relief of symptoms associated with the common cold, allergic rhinitis, and upper respiratory tract infections. It contains two active ingredients:

• Pseudoephedrine Hydrochloride – a decongestant that relieves nasal and sinus congestion.
• Triprolidine Hydrochloride – a first-generation antihistamine that helps alleviate sneezing, runny nose, and itchy or watery eyes.

ACTIFED Syrup is commonly used in adults and children for symptomatic relief of upper respiratory tract allergies and infections.

How to use ACTIFED

ACTIFED Syrup should be used exactly as directed by a healthcare provider or according to the product label. The syrup is taken orally using a proper measuring device to ensure accurate dosing.

• Shake the bottle well before each use.
• Measure the dose carefully using a medicine cup or oral syringe, not a household spoon.
• Can be taken with or without food.

Do not exceed the recommended dosage, and avoid using the product for more than 7 consecutive days without medical advice.

Mode of Action ACTIFED

ACTIFED Syrup works through the synergistic effects of its two active components:

• Pseudoephedrine HCl acts as a sympathomimetic agent, causing vasoconstriction of the nasal blood vessels. This reduces tissue swelling and nasal congestion.
• Triprolidine HCl is an H1-receptor antagonist that blocks the action of histamine, thereby reducing allergic symptoms such as sneezing, itching, and rhinorrhea.

Together, they provide effective relief from cold and allergy symptoms.

ACTIFED Interactions ACTIFED

ACTIFED Syrup may interact with several types of medications:

• Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs): Concurrent use can cause hypertensive crisis and should be avoided for at least 14 days after stopping an MAOI.
• Other CNS depressants: Such as alcohol, sedatives, or tranquilizers, may increase drowsiness caused by triprolidine.
• Beta-blockers and antihypertensives: Pseudoephedrine may reduce the effectiveness of these medications.
• Digitalis or other cardiac glycosides: Use with pseudoephedrine may increase the risk of arrhythmia.

Always inform your healthcare provider of all medications and supplements you are taking before using ACTIFED.

Dosage of ACTIFED

Recommended Dosage:

• Adults and children over 12 years: 10 ml every 4–6 hours. Do not exceed 4 doses (40 ml) in 24 hours.
• Children 6 to 12 years: 5 ml every 4–6 hours. Do not exceed 4 doses (20 ml) in 24 hours.
• Children under 6 years: Not recommended unless prescribed by a doctor.

Duration of use should not exceed 7 days unless directed by a healthcare provider.

Possible side effects of ACTIFED

Common side effects may include:

• Drowsiness or sedation
• Dry mouth, nose, or throat
• Dizziness or headache
• Upset stomach or nausea
• Restlessness or insomnia (especially in children)

Serious but rare side effects may include:

• Increased heart rate or palpitations
• High blood pressure
• Allergic reactions such as rash, itching, or swelling
• Urinary retention

Seek immediate medical attention if any serious or unusual side effects occur.

ACTIFED Contraindications ACTIFED

ACTIFED Syrup is contraindicated in the following conditions:

• Known hypersensitivity to pseudoephedrine, triprolidine, or any component of the formulation
• Use with or within 14 days of taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs)
• Severe hypertension or significant cardiovascular disease
• Narrow-angle glaucoma
• Severe urinary retention or prostatic hypertrophy
• Children under 2 years of age

Storage of ACTIFED

Store ACTIFED Syrup under the following conditions:

• At room temperature: 15°C to 30°C (59°F to 86°F)
• Keep the bottle tightly closed and away from moisture, direct sunlight, and heat
• Keep out of reach of children
• Do not use after the expiry date printed on the bottle
